There a few disappointed looks in the Football Transfer Tavern this evening as Simon Cass from Mail Online fetches some of the latest transfer speculation from his paper into the bar.
Cass reports that Manchester United and Arsenal will have to fend off strong competition from Barcelona if they want to sign Borussia Dortmund midfield star Ilkay Gundogan.
Both Premier League clubs have been reportedly keeping tabs on the combative German international midfielder with a view to a possible future move after his impressive performances in Bundesliga.
It was hoped that David Moyes was viewing Gundogan as a potential solution to his midfield problems at Old Trafford, while Arsene Wenger is thought be a keen admirer.
However Cass indicates that Spanish papers have stated that La Liga giants Barcelona are now leading the race for the 23-year-old. They suggest that Barca representatives have already met with the players father as the Catalan giants attempt to try to land the German.
Gundogan’s contract with Dortmund finishes in 2015 while his modest £25,000-a-week salary could make him a target for Premier League or La Liga clubs.
Barca could yet see competition from La Liga rivals as Real Madrid see Gundogan as the perfect replacement for Xabi Alonso, who is set to depart the Bernabeu at the end of the current season.
This is certainly a player we have been watching in recent years after he broke through at the Westfalenstadion and we will keep track on any potential developments on his future as our punters worry that he might not grace the Premier League anytime soon.
