Arsenal: Mesut Ozil could move to Major League Soccer side DC United

Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil could be DC United’s marquee signing to replace the outgoing Wayne Rooney, according to US journalist Steven Goff (via The Sun).

Goff said: “One of Ozil’s reps will meet with DCU officials next week in Washington.” (Source: The Sun)

Rooney completed a move to Championship side Derby County as a player/coach. The Englishman will stay with DC United until the end of the current MLS season, so any move away from the Emirates for Ozil will likely occur in January.

Mesut Ozil has been linked with a move away from the Emirates amid an alleged fractious relationship with manager Unai Emery. Ozil signed a new £350,000 a week contract back in January 2018, and has come under the microscope for his less than impressive performances from fans and pundits alike.

Former Arsenal man Cesc Fabregas criticised the 30-year-old saying he doesn’t have it in him to be a leader. Graeme Souness also hit out at Ozil’s leadership skills after his reaction to being substituted during the club’s 2-2 draw away to Crystal Palace. Souness said:

“You’re the captain when you’re on the pitch show courage to get on the ball when you’re not dominating.”

“He doesn’t do that. I’m sorry to harp on about him a bit but a man with that much talent should influence games like that.” (Source: Football London)

The former Germany international endured a torrid season last campaign, scoring just five goals and assisting just two in the Premier League.

A move away would be the best thing possible for Arsenal. Ozil has failed to live up to the £350,000 a week contract that he signed last January and needs to be sold.

Arsenal struggled in many of their away games last season, winning only seven of their 19 games, with Ozil only starting seven games. This shows what Emery thought of Ozil in the more difficult games last season.

Arsenal were only afforded £45m in this summer’s transfer window due to financial troubles, but moving Ozil on will free up £350,00o worth of wages that can be put to better use.
