Metro have Arsenal fans rushing over to our landlord at the bar here in the Football Transfer Tavern as news of today’s gossip filters through.
Apparently the north London club are in the market for another forward this summer and less than a year after bringing Danny Welbeck to the club in a £16 million deal, Arsene Wenger has his heart set on Jackson Martinez.
The highly coveted forward currently plays his trade for Porto and as our regulars note, they are a selling club that puts Tottenham Hotspur to shame.
If the price is right, Porto will sell and president Pinto da Costa all but confirmed this by claiming: ‘If somebody pays [his value] he will go,’ and it seems that Wenger wants to be the one to pay the £29.5 million it will take to lure the player away from Portugal and to the Premier League.
We think that there could be a bidding war for Martinez with a few clubs around Europe tracking the Columbian international.
Punters in the Transfer Tavern believe a top four finish for the Gunners is essential to help lure players like Martinez to the Emirates Stadium.
