Mesut Ozil has had a tough time of it at Arsenal, and it’s looking increasingly clear that the German’s long-term future at the Emirates is looking bleak. Unai Emery doesn’ seem to rate him particularly highly, though at present it’s fair to say that he will remain at the club, given that the Gunners don’t have anyone like him.
However, that could change in the summer. According to the Mirror, Arsenal are amongst the teams keen on Man Utd man Juan Mata, whose contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season.
It’s hard to believe, but at 31-years-old, Mata is now a veteran of the Premier League, having been a regular in the top flight since he moved to Chelsea back in 2011.
In that time he’s delivered many assists, with a high of 12 at Chelsea, in the English top flight, which is a testament to his ability with the ball at his feet. He’s older now and so, naturally, his game has declined somewhat – but something that never leaves a player is his innate ability with the ball at his feet.
Mata’s still got that in droves, and that could be an interesting prospect for Arsenal. In Pierre-Emerick Aubaemyang and Alexandre Lacazette, the Gunners have two of Europe’s deadliest forwards, but a lack of service has been an issue at points this season.
Ozil, for one reason or another, just doesn’t fit Emery’s style – but Mata would. He’s got more of a work ethic, he’s often far more involved, and he’s certainly far more consistent than the German.
Bringing the Spaniard in, then, would mean that Ozil is no longer an important option for the Gunners.
