There are surprised looks in the Football Transfer Tavern today after the Daily Star revealed that Arsenal could challenge Tottenham and Manchester City for £30 million rated Benfica winger Eduardo Salvio.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has reportedly put the 23-year-old winger on his wishlist with the Portuguese side known to be resigned to seeing their Argentine winger depart this summer.
But the Emirates Stadium side will face competition from Manchester City, who want another wide man after landing Sevilla winger Jesus Navas earlier this summer, and Spurs whose manager Andre Villas-Boas wants another winger for his White Hart Lane side after signing Nacer Chadli.
Salvio was in impressive form for Benfica last season, playing every match for the Portuguese team while netting 15 goals for the Europa League runners-up and the former Atletico Madrid man could prove an excellent acquisition for any Premier League side.
Pressure is building on Wenger to make a high-profile signing during the summer transfer window with just the acquisition of free-transfer Yaya Sanogo to his name already.
And reports suggests the Gunners could also target Salvio’s team-mate Nicolas Gaitan if they lose out on their original target. Gaitan plays on either the left or right wing and Wenger has been following the 26-year-old’s progress with a view to a future move for sometime.
Is this the sort of player Arsenal should be targeting? Who will win the race for the Benfica man? Let us know your thoughts below.
