The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are delighted by recent reports which claim Jack Wilshere is set to extend his contract with the club, and they are hoping he will set a precedent for the likes of Aaron Ramsey to also commit their future to the Gunners.
Jack Wilshere’s future at the Emirates Stadium looked dead and buried during the early stages of the season where he could hardly buy a Premier League start for love nor money, but fast-forward almost 6 months and the Arsenal academy product has risen to become a key player for the club once again. His development has placed him firmly in contention to be in England’s starting eleven when they kick-off their World Cup campaign against Tunisia next month, and judging by his recent form you’d have to say he deserves it.
However, whether Wilshere will remain an Arsenal player by that point has been a question our resident Gunners have pondered over for quite some time, but recent reports emerging from the Daily Mirror suggest a conclusive answer could be on the horizon. According to the report, Arsenal have offered Wilshere an improved contract in excess of £100,000 per week in order to convince him to stay at the club.
Whether Wilshere (valued at £16.2 million by Transfermarkt) accepts the offer remains to be seen, but it’s imperative that the club secure his future to prove their ambition to Aaron Ramsey. The Welsh international is out of contract at the end of the 2018/19 season, so Arsenal will certainly be eager to open negotiations with him during the coming months.
Considering how effective Ramsey has been this season, the club would be foolish to do anything other than meet his demands and tie him down to a long-term deal. The Alexis Sanchez transfer saga which loomed over the club for more than 6 months proved that players are willing to move to Premier League rivals if a generous offer is on the table, so Arsenal must learn their lesson and ensure that both Wilshere and Ramsey have signed new contracts by the beginning of the new season.
Although Wilshere has struggled for fitness and consistency during his time at Arsenal, there’s no doubt he can play a pivotal role in enabling the club to return to the top-four, and that’s a fact Ramsey is bound to recognise. Arsenal need to secure Wilshere’s future to keep hold of a quality player in himself, but also to make a statement of intent to the rest of the squad which should convince Ramsey to follow suit and put pen to paper on a new deal this summer.
