The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have been impressed by the manner in which Jack Wilshere has worked his way back into the first-team this season and they are desperately hoping he will sign a new deal with the club before his contract expires.
Jack Wilshere has demonstrated an extremely professional attitude throughout the majority of the season so far, and the level of performance he has displayed suggests he has finally turned a corner in his development. At 26-years-old it’s fair to say that Wilshere will never live up to the potential he promised as a teenager when he burst onto the scene in English football, but that does not suggest that Arsenal should be willing to let him go this summer.
Speculation concerning Wilshere’s future has been rife within the British media in recent weeks, but recent reports emerging from The Daily Mirror suggest that could be set to end very shortly. The report claims that Wilshere and Arsenal are close to agreeing terms over a new contract following a stand-off between the two parties, much to the delight of the Gunners faithful lining up our bar.
After a loan spell at Bournemouth and a period of bench-warming at the beginning of the season, Wilshere has become a pivotal player for the Gunners since the turn of the year when he established himself as a first-team regular. He has returned at optimum fitness whilst displaying the level of technical ability which football fans are so used to witnessing from the deep-lying play-maker, and with further first-team opportunities he is only likely to improve his decision making in the final-third.
The beginning of the post-Wenger era will be a test for everybody involved with the club which could go in one of many directions, but without Wilshere Arsenal will struggle to return to the Champions League next season. Big changes are looming at the Emirates Stadium and the remaining Stalwarts of the Wenger era – such as Wilshere – will be needed to ensure the transition into a new era is a smooth one, so the club’s hierarchy simply have to tie the England international down to a new deal this summer in order to return to Europe’s elite next season.
