Talk in the Football Transfer Tavern has turned to who Arsenal could target to strengthen their ranks in the forthcoming 2015/16 season.
While our resident Gooners shout the names Mats Hummels, Morgan Schneiderlin and Petr Cech, one name linked by Metro today is rather different and that of FC Porto’s Algerian international star Yacine Brahimi.
It is at this point that our Arsenal fans display wry smiles and concede that Arsene Wenger is actually far more likely to pursue yet another unneeded winger rather than the aforementioned defensive-minded names who could truly turn the Emirates Stadium outfit into real title contenders.
Metro claim that in order for the Gunners to successfully get their hands on Brahimi in the summer, Wenger will need to stump up the full £33 million to activate his release clause at Estadio do Dragao.
Brahimi himself has been nothing short of a revelation in Portugal this season and his form is all the more impressive given it is his debut campaign in the Primeira Liga following a switch from Granada for just €6.5 million last summer.
If Arsenal do decide to formalise their interest in the Algerian star, they will face competition from the likes of AC Milan and Manchester United who have also been linked with his services.
While the majority of our Gooners by the bar claim Wenger should chase alternative targets, one neutral points out that Brahimi is currently the top scorer in this season’s Champions League and that any side could do with that sort of player in their ranks.
