Arsenal not preparing to offer World Cup winner a new contract, will leave in 2017

MertesackerSome Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern almost fell off the bar stools today, as they were surprised to hear the club isn’t preparing fresh terms for a senior member of their squad.

The Times says Arsenal are not looking to extend Per Mertesacker’s deal in north London, which expires next summer, as the Gunners are focused on improving their defensive ranks.

Despite boasting Petr Cech, Hector Bellerin, Laurent Koscielny, Nacho Monreal and Mertesacker amongst their first-choice line-up, the Gunners have remained leaky at the back and it’s a hole that needs to be plugged if Arsenal are to enjoy further success.

Arsenal’s ‘BFG’ is a popular figure at the club but Arsene Wenger will keep a close eye on the player’s fitness and form before offering fresh terms, with the former Werder Bremen defender now the wrong side of 30.

If Arsenal do manage to bring in recruits, Mertesacker is the most likely to be sacrificed ahead of leading defender Koscielny and the promising Gabriel Paulista- although the latter needs to learn English fast if he is to be a success in the Premier League.

Arsenal fans, should Mertesacker be allowed to leave when his current deal ends? Let us know in the comments below!
