Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are still focused on this season as they look ahead to this afternoon’s match against Premier League champions Manchester United but a report from Metro has distracted attention onto next season as they report that they club are in talks with Lyon midfielder Maxime Gonalons over a possible summer move.
The 23-year-old is considered as one of the best midfielders in France and Arsene Wenger has been monitoring his progress for the last 12 months with a view to a possible transfer with the French boss now making an approach for Gonalons.
However Metro explain that Wenger suffers a poor relationship with Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas after previous failed transfer deals but money talks and Arsenal are preparing to offer around £15 million to secure their man.
Wenger has prioritised bringing a defensive midfielder into the club after failing to replace Alex Song last summer with Abou Diaby once again suffering from injury issues also. Gonalons, whose current deal with Lyon runs until 2016, could act as the perfect solution to Wenger’s midfield problem as he seeks to bring the first trophy to the club in eight years.
