During the summer months it is no shock to us here at the Football Transfer Tavern that a club could well be set to spend big but given the claims from the Daily Mail who feel that Arsenal are that club, a little shock is allowed.
The side are known for their tight pockets and Arsene Wenger is not usually one to spend big – being a vocal critic of the transfer window and its inflated prices in general. Now it is thought that the manager will spend nearly £70 million this summer in a bid to make his side one of the best in the world again.
The Frenchman is looking at buying not only Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain for around £20 million but is also considering making moves for Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender and Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan both of whom currently play their trade in the Bundesliga.
Gundogan is thought to be higher on the Gunners wishlist than Bender who the Gunners will reportedly pursue if they hit a brick wall in terms of landing the aforementioned star from the grasp of Champions League runners-up Dortmund.
Wenger is also considering making a move for a keeper after losing faith in Wojciech Szczesny. Normally Arsenal fans have to suffer throughout the summer wondering which of their best players will be sold yet this summer it is players who could well join the club that are making the headlines.
