Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is keeping his options open due to the club’s faltering bid to get back into the Champions League next season, according to Goal.
Will Arsenal qualify for the Champions League?
The report also states that Alexandre Lacazette is in the same boat as his striking partner with regards to a new contract.
Aubameyang’s contract expires in the summer of 2021 after he signed on a three-and-a-half-year deal when he moved from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in January 2018.
Arsenal have won just four of their 11 Premier League games so far this season, leaving them six points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea (via WhoScored).
Aubameyang is far too valuable for the Gunners to lose in next summer’s transfer window. The Gabon international reached 50 goals quicker than Thierry Henry managed when he notched up the opening goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. This alone shows his devastating quality in front of goal and importance to the team.
Aubameyang has become such a talismanic figure for Unai Emery’s side. His eight league goals this season have won the club 10 of their 17 points, and without those goals, the club would be joint-19th alongside Norwich City in the league table.
Think about how long it took the club to replace Robin van Persie following his departure in the summer of 2012. The north London giants spent five-and-a-half years relying on Olivier Giroud to score the goals before someone like Aubameyang turned up at the club.
With the side currently sitting six points off fourth and having a habit of losing European finals, it seems Champions League football next season isn’t a certainty. If the club struggled to replace van Persie when they were among Europe’s elite, imagine the struggle if the Gabonese forward leaves and they aren’t even in the competition.
