Arsenal planning audacious swoop for Chelsea ace

cech.jpgA surprising story has reached us in the Football Transfer Tavern courtesy of Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail, regarding Arsenal’s search for a new goalkeeper.

Chelsea number one Petr Cech is the surprise name on Arsenal’s six man shortlist to replace goalkeeper  Wojciech Szczesny next season.

Arsene Wenger is adamant the Polish goalkeeper needs replacing as first choice, and has sent scouts to watch Cech extensively according to reports.

Any move for the Chelsea keeper would go down as one of the most surprising in recent memory but Arsenal are counting on the Blues recalling the highly rated Belgian keeper Thibaut Courtois from his loan spell at Atletico Madrid next season.

Chelsea are convinced Courtois is the long-term successor to Cech after two excellent seasons on loan at the Vicente Calderon in Spain.

Cech’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires in 2016, and the possibility of a move across London whilst seeming remote, does signal Wenger’s intentions to spend big in the summer.

Pepe Reina, Asmir Begovic, Michel Vorm, Victor Valdes and Rene Adler are the other five names on the Arsenal managers shortlist.

Szczesny has struggled for form this season, and has been dropped for the last two matches away to Bayern Munich and Swansea City to be replaced by Lukasz Fabianski. The fact Arsenal have kept two consecutive clean sheets in those matches suggests the Pole is set for an extended spell warming the bench.
