Arsenal plot £9m swoop to capture leading Bundesliga defender

HowedesArsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are brushing up on their German, amid reports that another player from the World champions could be on his way to North London.

The Daily Express, reporting via SportBild, state that Arsenal are eying a £9m swoop for Schalke’s international defender Benedikt Howedes.

27-year-old German ace Howedes is a long-term target for the Gunners, reportedly rejecting a transfer in the summer, but he will have just 12 months remaining on his contract at the end of the season- intensifying speculation he could leave.

With a release clause of just £9m, Arsenal could land the defender for a cut-price fee and will have received a boost by the player’s previous claims that stated he would love to play in the Premier League.

“A move abroad excites me. England would for sure be an interesting destination,”

Arsenal currently have Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel Paulista as their options in the middle of the park but the transformation of Calum Chambers into a holding midfielder has left the options at the back vulnerable, should any injuries occur.

With Mertesacker now 31 and Koscielny not far behind aged 30, our landlord believes having a slightly younger option within the squad would certainly be useful- especially one with the vast experience that Howedes possesses.
