Most punters in The Football Transfer Tavern are still recovering after last night’s impressive victory for England in their vital World Cup qualifier.
However attention has been distracted from the international action by the latest reports from The Telegraph who suggests that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is looking to bring West Bromwich Albion youngster Saido Berahino to the Emirates Stadium in January.
Wenger has reportedly been impressed with 20-year-old’s breakthrough at The Hawthorns and wants to make the England Under-21 international an Arsenal player in the New Year.
The striker started the season as a virtual unknown but after netting two goals in his first two games for the England Under-21’s while also hitting a stunning hat-trick on his full Albion debut against Newport in the Capital One Cup, he made an impression on most in the tavern.
His winner in the Baggies’ 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford has now created attention from across the Premier League with scouts watching him from the Gunners, Chelsea and Everton in recent weeks.
Amazingly the Burundi-born forward is currently on a deal worth a very basic £850-a-week and the Albion are already in talks to drastically improve his deal.
While the West Midlands club are confident that he will sign a new contract, his current contract is set to expire at the end of the season and although the club have a possible extension available it could see him leaving for a bargain price during the January transfer window.
Steve Clarke said when asked about the youngster this week: “He’s under contract with West Brom until the end of next season, so we’ve got plenty of time to sort out Saido’s future.
“He’s a sensible boy. He understands that all the rewards and riches come with hard work and he has to just concentrate on his football and let other people worry about his contract situation and whatever.
“Saido has got a big future in the game and all he can do now is work hard and make sure he is still a top player in ten years’ time.”
