Arsenal are planning to make a shock £15 million move for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, according to the Daily Star. It’s news that has taken the Football Transfer Tavern by surprise.
While we’re all sat tucking into the Easter eggs brought by punters, Paul Hetherington from the paper arrives into the bar with the speculation.
He reports that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is an admirer of the 24-year-old from his days at Fulham and could submit an official bid in the summer as he looks for more defensive reinforcements.
It is believed that United boss David Moyes has been frustrated with Smalling’s continued lack of progress at Old Trafford, while his the off-the-field conduct has also annoyed the former Everton boss.
That could see the England international on his way to the Emirates Stadium in the end as Moyes tries to freshen up his under-performing squad.
The fact that Smalling could slot in at right-back as well as at centre back could make him a decent option for Wenger as he looks for a new central defender.
Do you think that Smalling would a strong signing by the Gunners this summer? Let us know your thoughts below.
