Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have read in the Daily Mail that their club are lining up a £16m bid for Everton midfielder James McCarthy as they are searching for a defensive midfielder.
The Republic of Ireland international has impressed in the holding role for Everton over the last year and Arsene Wenger is confident that McCarthy can seamlessly fit in at Arsenal.
It is believed the manager has been supplied with numerous scouting reports and his coaches believe that he is a player who would provide much needed defensive discipline to their midfield.
This new rumour has put even more pressure on Roberto Martinez in the January transfer window as they are already expected to receive several bids for Ross Barkley and Chelsea are also eyeing Seamus Coleman.
But one key aspect of McCarthy’s game, which has picked up a lot of praise, is his consistency as he and Gareth Barry week in week out keep the Toffees ticking from the middle of the park.
As he plays such a key role in the squad, it is expected that Everton will reject the offer but they could end up considering an offer if the price is right.
