Arsenal fans are looking rather excited here in the Football Transfer Tavern as the Daily Mail think they could be set to try and tempt Wayne Rooney to join the club in January.
Rooney may have been welcomed back into the fold by David Moyes but as our punters all too rightly state, things in football can change rather quickly and a move is not totally off the cards just quite yet.
Over a game of pool, our landlord notes that Arsenal feel that they have a better chance of landing Rooney now – given they have made a great start to the season and managed to attract world class talent Mesut Ozil to the club from Real Madrid.
The signing of the German international is a key factor in Wenger’s reasoning that he can land Rooney. Ozil’s signature shows ambition and the fact that Arsenal are seriously trying to contend for titles and the top players around, and Rooney could well be part of that.
Arsenal many have spent the whole summer chasing after Liverpool forward Luis Suarez but they were also keen on England international Rooney – and as one of our punters quips, Manchester United were believed to be not opposed to selling him to the Gunners should the right bid have come in.
Ozil cost £42.5 million this summer, leaving Arsenal with a sizable amount of around £30 million left to spend on tempting Rooney to the Emirates Stadium.
Will Arsenal make a move for Wayne Rooney in January? Would United sell him to Arsenal? Let us know your thoughts below.
