Speculation has arrived in the Football Transfer Tavern this afternoon that Arsenal will make their long-expected move for Queens Park Ranger goalkeeper Julio Cesar.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger wants the Brazilian international shot stopper as his next summer signing to follow Auxerre’s Yaya Sanogo and today’s Metro reports that the Gunners will submit a £1.5 million bid this week as they try to land the former Inter Milan keeper.
The QPR keeper will be departing Loftus Road after the Hoops’ relegation from the Premier League last season with Harry Redkanpp desperate to get Cesar’s reported £70,000-a-week wages off the bill.
And he could be set for the Emirates Stadium as Wenger looks to find a solution to his goalkeeping woes. Current first choice keeper Wojciech Szczesny had a mixed 2012/13 between the sticks and lost his place to Polish compatriot Lukasz Fabianski near the end of the campaign.
This uncertainty has seen Wenger target a top class stopper who can put pressure on the young Polish international as he looks to end the well publicised eight-year trophy drought.
Cesar, 33, impressed at times for the relegated side last season and could be a valuable addition to the Arsenal side.
