Arsenal will move to sign France Under-21 centre-back Dayot Upamecano, according to reports in The Sun.
They say Unai Emery hopes the Red Bull Leipzig player can ease their defensive worries if they can bring him to the Emirates either in January or the summer.
The Sun believes a new bid for the 20-year-old is on the way, and they think Leipzig are likely to be tempted by a £40m offer.
Upamecano’s current contract runs out at the end of next season, and there’s no sign of him signing a new deal, meaning it might be time for the Bundesliga high-flyers to cut their losses and cash in on him while they can.
The report says the Frenchman is “firmly on their radar as the centre-back they want”, and that could be proved by Bild’s report that they offered £40m for him in the summer.
Unai Emery also has William Saliba, 18, on loan at Saint-Etienne, but The Sun claims Upamecano is seen as the best option to fit alongside David Luiz as he’d be ready to play for the first team right away.
The youngster has experience of playing at the level Arsenal aim to reach by next season in the Champions League.
That’ll please Unai Emery, because it suggests he’s capable of dealing with the pressure of the big occasion and remaining composed on the ball to build up play from the back.
His 6ft 1in frame will also give Arsenal some added brawn to their backline as they aim to tighten up after conceding more goals than anyone in the top six bar Chelsea.
David Luiz was a shrewd signing but at 32 years old he’s unlikely to be the main man in the backline for the next decade, whereas Upamecano could well be, and so he could be worth the money in January or the summer.
