Roma defender Philippe Mexes is stalling on a new deal with his current club and there have been reports stating the player is close to signing for AC Milan, but this has alerted long term admirers of the player Arsenal and Chelsea in case that deal is not tied up.
The Frenchman has claimed that he will make a decision on the new contract at the end of the current season, by which time there will be a multitude of other offers on the table for the international defender.
Mexes began his career with Toulese in their youth setup before he quickly moved to Auxerre and after graduating from their youth team he went on to play for the first team for 5 years making 133 appearances. The centre-back impressed greatly during his time playing in his homeland and that brought about a move to Serie A where he signed for Roma after a protracted negotiation that in the end saw the Italian club pay £6million for the services of the defender.
His time in Italy has been very successful and he has gone onto be the rock at the heart of the teams defence, on one occasion the player went as far as to say that he would like to spend his whole career playing for Roma well that now appears to be up for debate.
There were reports earlier this week saying that the player had already signed for Milan, but this doesn’t appear 100% certain yet. The player is stated as saying:
“I have many offers, but I will not decide my future until the season ends….Right now, I could go to any of the major leagues in the world, but I have to evaluate many things when I make my decision.”.
The future of Mexes seems remarkably uncertain, if the supposed deal with AC Milan is not in place like has been suggested I think it would be highly likely that Chelsea and Arsenal would move for the Frenchman. His game is all about strength and power and I think he would be a fine asset in the Premier League.
Chelsea are looking to reshape their whole team and the signing of David Luiz was the first step in building a new defence, clearly John Terry doesn’t have too many more years on the clock and the idea of pairing Luiz and Mexes at the heart of the back-line could be particularly appealing, I think they would form a really good partnership.
Arsenal have improved greatly this season but I still believe they have frailties at the back, there are big question marks over Squillaci and Laurent Koscielny as both have struggled so far this term and Frenchman Mexes is a player that Arsene Wenger has tracked for a long time.
This is one of those stories that could be over pretty soon or could run and run. If reports are true that his signing with Milan is done then that is the end of it, but if it turns out those stories were wide of the mark this one could run well into the Summer!
