Metro have Arsenal fans on the edge of their bar stools in the Football Transfer Tavern as they claim that the club are back in the race for defender Swansea City defender Ashley Williams.
After learning that club captain Thomas Vermaelen would be out for up to three months with injury, Arsene Wenger has wasted no time in renewing his interest in Swansea’s influential skipper.
Michael Laudrup will understandably try to hold onto the defender but when a club like Arsenal comes calling, as he knows only too well from being a player himself, it is hard to say no to such an opportunity.
Playing at the Emirates Stadium would give 28-year-old Williams chances he never dreamed of and Wenger knows this.
Swansea may value their skipper at around £12 million but after careful consideration, Wenger is willing to pay up to £10 million for the imposing centre back and will attempt to negotiate a deal with the Swans for the Welsh international in the coming weeks.
With the injury to Vermaelen, Wenger knows he is going to be left without substantial cover at the back and is determined not to see his side suffer this season – and actually clear some of the dust away from the trophy cabinet at the Emirates Stadium and add something tangible to it.
Given Vermaelen’s injury, will Arsenal actually plug this gap with the capture of Williams? Let us know your thoughts below.
