Top of the Premier League at the half-way stage, Arsenal fans know just how significant the current transfer window will be for their side with Arsene Wenger attempting to strengthen the club’s title challenge.
News was broken yesterday that back-up striker Nicklas Bendtner has been ruled out with an ankle injury for at least six weeks and this could see Wenger moving for a new forward during the winter window.
Now David Woods from The Daily Star reports that Arsenal are set to step up their interest in Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa by submitting a £32m bid to test the La Liga club’s resolve.
The 25-year-old Atletico striker is thought to have a buy-out clause in his deal at the Vicente Calderón Stadium but they are desperate to keep hold of their star striker. Brazil-born striker Costa – who has since declared that he wants to play for Spain at the upcoming World Cup– has scored a staggering 19 goals in just 17 La Liga appearances this season.Wenger realises the need to add a world class striker to his ranks after failing to sign Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez over the summer. As one punter quips, signing a striker must be a priority during the upcoming transfer window if they want to secure their first piece of silverware in over eight years. They are unlikely to land Costa without a fight as Chelsea also look at the Atletico ace, although the Blues are more likely to look at him during the summer instead. This could leave the way open for Arsenal to take the lead this month, however, it is not known if Costa would swap life in Spain at this stage of his career.
