Arsenal rebuffed after £40m bid

Luis SuarezThere’s a fierce discussion breaking out in the Football Transfer Tavern this morning after BBC Sport sensationally reported last night that Arsenal have seen an improved but unusual bid thought to be exactly £40,000,001 for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez rejected.

The reasoning behind the exact offer comes from our trusted landlord who explains that Suarez, 26, has a clause in Reds his contract whereby any bid over £40 milion must be considered by the Anfield club and then they must inform the player.

But the major part is that it is not a release clause and they are under no obligation to sell. The latest offer from the Emirates Stadium was instantly turned down by the Reds who insist that the Uruguayan striker is not for sale this summer.

However if the bidding continues to rise for the controversial player, who netted 30 times in his 44 appearances for the Anfield side last season, their resolve is likely to be seriously tested.

Since joining Liverpool in January 2011 from Ajax in a £22.7 million deal, Suarez has become one of the stars of the Premier League but after his current club failed to secure qualification for any European competition the striker has decided he wants to leave despite only signing an extension last summer.

The former Ajax man had another controversial season for the Reds and he was infamously punished with a 10-match ban for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic in April, with games still to serve.

This has led to increased speculation in the tavern that his time at Liverpool will come to an end during the current transfer window. But after another bid from their Premier League rivals was rejected Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers are clearly not planning to let him go without a fight.

Are Arsenal being disrespectful to the Reds by making Suarez unsettled? How much is the former Ajax striker really worth? Is this a new age for the Gunners in terms of spending? Let us know your thoughts below?
