It’s packed in the Football Transfer Tavern this morning as punters discover the latest transfer rumours and just as our landlord goes down to refill the barrels, news emerges that highly rated Southampton defender Luke Shaw has signed a new long-term contract with the St. Mary’s outfit.
Arsenal were known to be closely watching the 17-year-old left back, who has emerged for Nigel Adkins’ side this season, but the youngster has now opted to reject any advances from London to continue his development with the Saints.
He told the club’s official website: “I have spoken with the chairman about a long-term plan for me at the club.
“To put an end to all the speculation, I will be committing my future to Southampton. I’m not going anywhere.
“I think Southampton is the place to be for young kids like me. I’m playing in the Premier League for the first team and that is all anyone wants to be doing, so I just want to carry on.”
The England Under-19 international was thought to be the next off the Southampton production line to move to the Emirates Stadium after Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain but Arsene Wenger will now have to wait to secure the highly rated defender.
Shaw has made 10 Premier League starts this season, capitalising on an injury to Danny Fox with the Scottish international the first choice at the beginning of the campaign for Adkins’ side.
