Arsenal reportedly considering £45m move for 26-year-old international

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are still celebrating the signing of Alexandre Lacazette, but it has left them wanting more…

In recent years, the Gunners have rarely spent big to land recognisable players, but deals for the likes of Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and, now, Alexandre Lacazette, seem to suggest that the tide is turning.

A report from the Express would certainly seem to reflect that, too, with the publication reporting that the Gunners are now considering a £45 million move for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk has, of course, long been touted with a move to Liverpool, before the Reds issued an apology regarding their courting of the player. Since then, the Reds have been linked with a move for him once again, and so Arsenal’s reported interest will certainly come as a blow for Jurgen Klopp.

From the Gunners’ perspective, a move for van Dijk does make a lot of sense. Prior to his injury last term, he was one of the Premier League’s best defenders – and his leadership was crucial at the back for the Saints.

Arsenal have already spent big on their attack this summer, but our landlord is insistent that Wenger cannot ignore his defence, and so a move for van Dijk does make a lot of sense in that regard. Players like Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny are beginning to edge closer to the end of their careers, and the introduction of young blood could be a great move.
