A story in the Football Transfer Tavern raises some eyebrows this morning as Metro reports that Arsenal could move again for Swansea City’s centre back Ashley Williams after suffering a defensive injury crisis.
French international Laurent Koscielny pulled up with an apparent ankle problem during Arsenal’s pre-season Asian tour in Japan and with club captain Thomas Vermaelen out for the first three months of the season with a back injury this has left Arsene Wenger short of possible options in defence.
The two injuries leaves Wenger with just one renowned central defender in German international Per Mertesacker after Sebastien Squillaci was given a free transfer and Johan Djourou was sent to Hamburg on loan.
This shortage in defence could see Wenger reviving his former interest in the Welsh international having earlier seeing an £8 million bid rejected for the ex-Stockport County man.
The Gunners reportedly put together personal terms with Williams before reaching a transfer impasse with the South Wales team over a possible transfer fee with Wenger unwilling to pay over £10 million but given their crisis they could now return with an improved offer.
The 28-year-old was impressive as his side clinched the Capital One Cup last season and that has attracted suitors from across the Premier League.
However Swans boss Michael Laudrup is determined not to lose his star defender before the season kicks off and even handed Williams the team captain armband in a desperate attempt to keep him at the Liberty Stadium.
