Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern were surprised to hear they’re going toe-to-toe with Liverpool for a quality goalkeeper, which led to many discussions at the bar.
The Daily Star state that Arsenal are rivalling Liverpool for the signature of Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas, who could depart the Santiago Bernabeu this summer if David De Gea seals his move to Spain.
Arsenal would likely use the Costa Rican international as back-up to Petr Cech, with speculation David Ospina could leave and concerns over Wojciech Szczesny’s ability, whilst Liverpool would make Navas their first-choice stopper over Simon Mignolet.
Whether the 29-year-old would be happy to play second-fiddle at the Emirates remains to be seen but Arsene Wenger could utilise him as a cup stopper, including for games in the Champions League, in a similar fashion as to what he did with Ospina at the start of this campaign.
However, our landlord feels that Navas would prefer to be first-choice somewhere and that he’ll have plenty of suitors- although he does admit Liverpool’s lack of Champions League football could be problematic.
