It’s an early start in the Football Transfer Tavern this morning as BBC Sport’s chief football writer Phil McNulty arrives with some massive transfer news to start the week in style. Arsenal have seen a huge £30 million offer for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez turned down, according to the Beeb’s chief sports correspondent.
It’s news that has seen pints spilt around the bar as the BBC reports that Arsenal have made an approach for the controversial Uruguayan striker but it was immediately rebuffed by the Anfield-based club.
There had been large wagers made on Arsenal securing the former Ajax man this summer which caused betting companies to suspend betting but this is the first we have heard about official interest from the Emirates Stadium.
Here in the tavern most punters are amazed that Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has decided to offer a record amount for the 26-year-old and some are quite surprised that Liverpool rejected the transfer bid out of hand.
Arsenal are already close to signing Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain in what would be a record £23 million deal but this shock transfer offer would have blown even that move out of the water.
Liverpool have made clear that despite interest from Real Madrid and Chelsea that they do not to want sell Suarez this summer. They appear to be living up to their word however regarding digging their heels and you can understand why they are very reluctant to sell to their Premier League rivals.
Can you believe this news? Does this mark a new era for Arsenal and Wenger? Should Liverpool think about accepting an offer over £30 million for a clearly unsettled player? Let us know your thoughts below.
