The Daily Mail have a cracker of a story for us today in the Football Transfer Tavern as they claim that Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney could well spark a £20 million bid from Arsenal.
Arsene Wenger has long been a fan of the forward and links of a move for the United striker have not gone away this summer – in fact they seem to have gotten ever louder by the week.
Given Rooney is not exactly on the best of terms with new manager David Moyes, not to mention the fact that Wenger is determined to add even more fire power to his side, and has the money to do it, as one punter quips, we would not be shocked to see the move actually come off.
Rooney himself would prefer a move to Chelsea and a link up with Jose Mourinho and even Real Madrid have been linked with the forward in recent days.
However, Wenger is confident that the chance to link up with a forward of the calibre of Gonzalo Higuain would provide a huge lure for Rooney and is willing to put his money where his mouth is and make a £20 million bid for the former Everton forward.
Quite what Moyes and the board at Old Trafford think of this remains to be seen, but one thing is clear – the speculation over the forward’s future is only set to continue.
