Arsenal fans are looking up from their pints here in the Football Transfer Tavern at the latest offering from the Daily Mirror, and they are right to be concerned.
The publication claims that the Gunners could well be set to miss out on Romanian international striker Ciprian Marica after Fiorentina joined the race for the free agent.
Whilst talk in the tavern has all been about which players could well be leaving Premier League clubs to go out on an emergency loan, it is worth noting that top flight clubs are still able to sign players who are out of contract players to boost their squads.
That is exactly what Arsene Wenger thought he was close to doing with Marica, and the former Stuttgart player’s agent had even hinted that a deal between Arsenal and his client was about to be settled.
As our landlord hands out some free samples of the new old pale ale on offer at the bar, he fills us in on the situation surrounding Serie A side Fiorentina.
He notes that the club are currently searching for a forward after Mario Gomez suffered a serious injury. Gomez has partially torn a ligament in his knee, meaning that he will face a lengthy spell on the sidelines, and this of course has forced Fiorentina to look for a replacement for their marquee summer addition.
The Viola have placed Arsenal target Marica at the top of their list, thus plunging the 27-year-old’s proposed move to the Emirates Stadium into real doubt.
As one Arsenal fan quips, the Gunners are as much in need of a forward as are Fiorentina, and Wenger needs to pull out all the stops to land this one given Olivier Giroud and Nicklas Bendtner are the club’s only out and out first team centre forwards.
Will Arsene Wenger beat off competition from Fiorentina to land Marica? Is Wenger at fault for not landing striking reinforcements in the summer? Let us know your thoughts below.
