Arsenal should drop everything to attempt £31.5m-rated transfer coup – opinion

Arsenal’s transfer business this summer has been impressive, with Unai Emery really making an impact over the last month or two. The Spaniard is beginning to put his mark on the team, and though his deals thus far have been great, the Gunners have yet to sign a landmark name.

They’ve brought in the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette over the last year, and those deals served the purpose of sending a message to their rivals, and another big name arrival could do the same as Arsenal head into their most important campaign in years.

That’s why a move for Leonardo Bonucci, who is rated at £31.5m by Transfer Markt, would be such a brilliant idea.

Arsenal have had a bit of a problem defensively, and though the Gunners’ squad has improved dramatically, the defence could do with further improvement. In the heart of the defence, in particular, neither Laurent Koscielny or Shkodran Mustafi have particularly impressed over the last year – and that’s a problem that Sokratis Papastathopoulos cannot fix on his own.

The addition of Bonucci, though, would certainly help. The Italian has been one of Europe’s best and most consistent defenders over the last few years, first for Juventus and more recently for AC Milan. He’s a typically old-fashioned defender, offering robust and aggressive tackling – a style that would suit the Premier League perfectly.

He’s also a fantastic leader, and he has years of experience behind him at the highest level. Arsenal have now built a young squad, and with Unai Emery looking to bring silverware back to the club, it’s important that there are players like Bonucci in the squad to make that a reality.

Though he’s 31-years-old, Bonucci is a player that is still at the top of his game, and it’s hard to deny that he’s amongst Europe’s best. Bringing him in, then, would undoubtedly be a coup for the club. That said, the project could appeal to him, and the quality that he would bring to the team would be unparalleled. He’s just what the Gunners need, no matter the cost.
