Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are keen to see Arsene Wenger’s replacement appointed soon so they can crack on with their summer transfer business.
Ex-Arsenal captain, Mikel Arteta, is the favourite to land the job after working at Manchester City as a coach under Pep Guardiola. However, former PSG boss Unai Emery has also emerged as a late candidate to take the hot seat at the Emirates. The 46-year-old won three Europa League trophies with Sevilla as well as completing the treble in France last year.
If given the job in North London, Emery should make replacing Petr Cech his number one priority this summer. The former Czech Republic international is approaching the end of his career at 36-years-old; Arsenal need a new long-term goalkeeper. His primary target should be Bayer Leverkusen stopper – Bernd Leno.
Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the 26-year-old has established himself as one of the best keepers in the Bundesliga and will travel to the World Cup as part of Germany’s squad. He has kept 12 clean sheets in 38 appearances during all competitions this season. Due to a release clause in his contract, he could be available for as little as £22m.
Leno has excellent reflexes, and with a better back four in front of him, he could develop into a world class keeper at the Emirates. With his best years ahead of him, the Gunners must not pass up an opportunity to sign him for cheap before it’s too late.
