Arsenal star admits his Emirates Stadium future is uncertain

Thomas Vermaelen

All the talk in the Football Transfer Tavern surrounding Arsenal of late has been about possible new arrivals.

Therefore, it has come as a surprise to hear from sources at the Daily Star that their club captain could still be on his way out of the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Belgian international Thomas Vermaelen has been linked with a move away from the Emirates for some time, having failed to break up the first choice partnership of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker last season.

And reports last month suggested a deal that would see him join Manchester United was thought to be close, only for the World Cup to delay any potential deal.

Vermaelen himself confirmed that all his attentions were on helping Belgium during their World Cup campaign in Brazil, but following their elimination to Argentina at the quarter-final stage, his future is once again up for debate.

Vermaelen said: “I really do not know where I will play, Arsenal or elsewhere next season.

“All my attention went to the World Cup. I will see when I talk with Arsenal.”

United are understood to have already launched a bid for the 28-year-old, but the Gunners have stalled on their Premier League rivals whilst identifying possible replacements.

But with Vermaelen having returned from World Cup duty in Brazil, any potential move could now move on at quite a pace, especially considering Arsenal are set to complete the signing of Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United in the next 48 hours.
