BBC Sport have certainly raised a few eyebrows here in the Football Transfer Tavern after claiming that Barcelona have made a £15 million bid for Thomas Vermaelen – and it has been accepted.
This of course means a couple of things. One – Manchester United are set to miss out on the defender.
Two – a swap deal between United and Arsenal is now off the table and the Red Devils may be stuck with Portuguese flop Nani for another year.
Finally, £15 million for a defender who is little more than a bit-part player at Arsenal is a huge amount of money and another massive coup for the Gunners and their manager Arsene Wenger this summer.
Over by the pool table, one of our punters notes that we had thought all summer long that Vermaelen’s days at the Emirates Stadium were numbered, but we also thought that Barcelona were on the look out for top class defensive talent this summer.
Well one out of the two isn’t bad we suppose.
Arsenal fans. What do you think of this deal? Is that a huge coup for Wenger being able to extort so much money for a player he did not really need anymore? Let us know your thoughts below.
