Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have been given another reason to be concerned today, following comments made by one of their favourite players.
Spanish media outlet AS quote Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla as admitting he would love to return to Villarreal before he retires and hopes to watch this weeks Europa League quarter-final against Liverpool in amongst the Yellow Submarines’ supporters.
“I would not rule out returning to Villarreal. Everyone knows how special that club is for me. If I get permission from my club I will be attending the second leg at Anfield, as another ‘groguet‘ [‘yellow’] supporter.”
Arsenal have missed Cazorla thoroughly during his injury spell this season and they’ll be desperate not to lose the player permanently, as replacing his services would be difficult, especially ahead of a summer when Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini will all leave.
However, Cazorla has just one-year remaining on his contract and, at the age of 31, it’s unlikely Arsenal would offer a long-term deal, whereas Villarreal may take a different stance if they were to bring the veteran back home.
Our landlord believes that Cazorla will be allowed to leave next summer when his contract expires, should Arsenal find a suitable replacement.
