Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern were left cursing their injury luck once again yesterday after the latest long-term setback but there is some positives to be taken out of the situation.
The Daily Mirror says Danny Welbeck’s latest problem has led to the Gunners increasing their interest in Juventus ace alvaro Morata, with Arsene Wenger keen to add a world-class striker to his squad this summer.
England international Welbeck, who has been ruled-out of the European Championships this summer, had only returned from a long-term injury in February that kept him sidelined for ten months but now, further knee surgery has put the forward out of action for another nine months.
The Gunners were likely to move for a striker in the summer window anyway but the injury to Welbeck will increase their need to compete a signing- and Juventus’ Morata is the prime target, if his signature becomes available.
Spanish giants Real Madrid could have a major say in Arsenal’s hopes of completing a deal for the Spaniard, as they still possess a buy-back clause in the 23-year-old’s contract and it has been suggested they will activate that deal, before selling Morata to raise funds for their own transfer activity.
