Arsenal suffer blow in chase for Wenger replacement

The Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are struggling to keep up with all of this manager talk!

It has been 20 years to the day since Arsenal were on the lookout for a new manager.

Arsene Wenger’s 20 years in charge of the Gunners has been a compelling period.

Filled with highs and lows, the Arsenal faithful in the Tavern would be forgiven if they thought they were watching a TV drama on the Tavern projector!

But with Arsene Wenger’s contract winding down, and no renewal plan currently on the table; the attention of the Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern has begun to shift towards who might succeed the French manager.

A couple of names have been linked with the post, including most notably Eddie Howe over the last few weeks – but one manager has seemingly ruled himself out of the chase, at least in the short term.

Diego Simeone has been touted for an Arsenal move by a few of the Gunners in the Tavern, with many feeling that his characteristics would suit the Premier League perfectly.

It was¬†reported earlier this week that Simeone had cut his contract down by two years, which many in the Tavern inferred as a ‘come and get me’ plea from the Argentine.

However, it would appear that an imminent Emirates arrival is not on the cards for the Atletico Madrid boss.

Speaking about cutting two years from his current Atletico deal, Simeone said (quotes sourced from the Daily Star): “This does not change anything”.

He continued:¬†“During the two years we can renew the deal, if they don’t want to get rid of me.”

“If I am here, it is because I want to be here”, he added.

Whilst he has not firmly shut the door on an Atletico Madrid departure in the future, he certainly has no plans to move anytime soon.

At the very least, our landlord thinks the will remain in Spain for two years until the expiry of his contract – at which point it may be too late for an Arsenal arrival.

It will certainly come as a blow for the Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern; many of which were dreaming of the Argentine coming to the club as soon as this summer.
