Arsenal suffer huge blow as hopes of securing exciting summer deal are dashed

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have been feeling very excited over the last few days…

It’s been a decent summer for the club so far, but there has been talk over the last few days that it could be about to get even better. According to the Sun, long-term Arsenal target Thomas Lemar has been edging closer to a move to the Emirates – leaving the Gunners in the Transfer Tavern feeling delighted.

Of course, Lemar enjoyed a fantastic campaign for Monaco last season and alongside players like Kylian Mbappe and Tiemoue Bakayoko took part in Monaco’s charge back to the top of Ligue 1.

For Arsenal, then, a move makes sense – and given his attacking proficiency, many in the Transfer Tavern have been desperate to see him line up alongside Alexandre Lacazette.

However, according to Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas on Twitter – Monaco president Vadim Vasilyev has poured cold water upon any talk of a move, revealing that Lemar is an “essential player’ at Monaco before noting that he will “stay with us [at Monaco]”.

It looks as though it’s back to the drawing board for the Gunners, and the fans in the Transfer Tavern can’t hide their disappointment.

Landlord’s Verdict

Thomas Lemar would have been a top signing for Arsenal. He is quick, creative and lethal in front of goal, and with the likes of Lacazette and Mesut Ozil in the side, he surely would have been a success at the Emirates.

However, the Monaco president appears confident that the player won’t leave the team, and that certainly aligns with the philosophy that they have had for much of the campaign.

For Arsenal, this just makes holding on to Alexis Sanchez even more important this summer, with the Chilean the only player within the Gunners’ squad that is comparable with Lemar.
