One of Football Transfer Tavern’s favourite defenders, Ashley Williams, has hinted that he would welcome a move to Arsenal this summer, as reported by Sky Sports.
Williams was unable to deny Manchester United a fine victory at the Liberty Stadium last night, but the Swansea defender is still keen on a move that will enable him to play Champions League football.
The Wales international has been linked all summer long with a move to Arsenal and Arsene Wenger may now be prepared to stump up the cash for the defender after an abysmal opening day defeat to Aston Villa.
Swansea are of course in the Europa League this season after winning the Capital One Cup in February, but Williams wants to play at the top level in Europe.
While stating that he would never disrespect Swansea and push through a move away from the club where he made his name, the 28 year old is flattered by Arsenal’s apparent interest.
“It’s very flattering but you take it with a pinch of salt because you see a lot written and you never know what to make of it,” Williams said.
“I just take it as a compliment. You must be doing something right, whether it’s true or not.”
“All players with any ambition want to see how high they can get, whether that’s with their team – which has been the case with me at Swansea – or whatever really.
“If I sat here and said I didn’t want to play in the Champions League, that’d be a lie. But I’d never disrespect a team I play for and say, ‘that’s it, I’m desperate to leave’, just after a story in the paper. I’d never do that or think that.”
