Arsenal target to cut holiday short to seal Gunners switch

Mathieu Debuchy

Arsenal fans have been getting edgy in the Football Transfer Tavern of late with the Gunners still yet to bring in any new additions this summer.

But sources at The Guardian reckon the first deal of the summer is imminent, with Newcastle United full back Mathieu Debuchy scheduled for a medical at the Emirates Stadium later this week.

The French international full back is set to cut his post World Cup holiday short in order to finalise his £7.9 million move from St. James’ Park.

All that remains to be decided is whether the Toon look to include Gunners forward Joel Campbell as a makeweight in the deal.

Campbell impressed during Costa Rica’s superb unexpected run to the World Cup quarter-finals, and with the Magpies short of striking options, the 22-year-old could well appeal to Alan Pardew.

Arsenal full back Carl Jenkinson has been another player mentioned as a possible makeweight in the deal, but Newcastle would prefer to explore other options in the right back department.

Feyenoord’s Daryl Janmaat and Manchester City’s Micah Richards have been mentioned as possible replacements for Debuchy, with the latter player managing just two Premier League appearances for the Premier League champions last season.

Debuchy meanwhile is set to become Arsenal’s first major signing of the summer, and will act as a replacement for Bacary Sagna, who joined Manchester City on a free transfer last month.

Arsenal fans. Be honest. Is Debuchy a better player than Sagna or are you just glad you are signing international cover in this position? Let us know your thoughts below.
