Arsenal’s hopes of signing Marseille forward Andre-Pierre Gignac have been dashed by Metro with the striker set to sign an extension at Stade Velodrome leaving Gooners disappointed in the Football Transfer Tavern.
Gignac’s current deal will expire in the summer and Arsene Wenger was hoping to be able to capitalise on the 28-year-old’s uncertain situation.
It is understood that the Gunners have opened talks with Marseille in a bid to lure him to the Emirates Stadium for a cut-price fee in January.
However despite interest from Arsenal, the striker is still open to staying in France and club president Vincent Labrune is working hard to tie Gignac down as he is fighting for him to sign on the dotted line in a one-year contract extension.
Arsenal fans hope that Wenger can use the club’s financial power to tempt the striker to North London. Gignac is currently the top goalscorer in Ligue 1 after scoring 10 goals in as many matches this season.
Many Arsenal fans hope he is still available in January as they are not overly convinced that new boy Danny Welbeck has got what it takes to lead the club’s frontline week in, week out.
