The Football Transfer Tavern was packed at lunchtime today when Ben Jefferson from The Express arrived in the bar to suggest that Arsenal are thought to be leading the pursuit for German star Julian Draxler.
The 20-year-old Schlake midfielder is reportedly a target for both Manchester United and and Chelsea but today’s reports indicate that the Gunners have moved into pole position after Arsene Wenger made first contract with the highly rated youngster.
Draxler, who is valued at £25 million and has already won 10 international caps for Germany, may not seem like the main priority for Wenger given Arsenal’s abundance of attacking midfielder but a player of Draxler’s reputation and quality wouldn’t go amiss as the Gunners attempt to challenge for the Premier League title.
Interestingly the latest speculation comes from Jan Aage Fjortoft, the former Premier League striker who now works in German media. We often get journalists telling us the latest rumours but Fjortoft has previous regarding correctly predicting Arsenal transfer news after he predicted that Mesut Ozil would be joining Arsenal during the summer.
Fjortoft said: “I understand Arsenal are big favourites. I understand Wenger talks to him often.”
Draxler has recently admitted asking his international team-mates at Arsenal about life in England, saying last month: “I’ve always said English teams are very big clubs and Arsenal are one of them. I sometimes speak to Mesut or Per about the team, about the club, and they always have good words.”
Will Draxler pull on the famous red shirt of Arsenal in the future? Let us know your thoughts below.
