There has been so much talk of possible incomings at Arsenal that punters in the Football Transfer Tavern are surprised to hear from the Daily Mail that two players could soon be on their way out of the club.
Mikel Arteta and Nacho Monreal are said to both be considering returning to Spain, with Athletic Bilbao showing an interest in both players.
Vice-captain Arteta has made it clear he wants to stay and fight for his place at the Emirates Stadium although left back Monreal may well be tempted to return to Spain having only moved to North London from Malaga 18 months ago.
Arteta moved to Arsenal for £10 million from Everton in the summer of 2011, having previously had spells at Rangers and Real Sociedad.
The Gunners have made no secret of their desire to land a new holding midfielder this summer and have been linked with the likes of Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira and Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho.
With Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere both set to return from injury as well, 32-year-old Arteta is likely to find first team football harder to come by next season and Bilbao are ready to offer him a chance to play week in, week out.
