Arsenal to fight off Manchester United for Ligue 1 gem?

Maxime GonalonsArsenal love signing a Frenchman and there’s a rumour in the Football Transfer Tavern suggesting it could well be happening all over again.

According to today’s copy of the Daily Express, Arsene Wenger is ready to trump Napoli in the race for Maxime Gonalons.

Gonalons, who currently plays for Lyon, has spent the last 15 years in France and is said to be on the lookout for a new challenge.

The France international has made 143 appearances for the Stade Gerland side since making his debut in 2009 – but Arsenal have a fight on their hands.

Wenger sees the midfielder as a cheaper and younger option than Arturo Vidal, but he’s got many suitors.

Reports suggest Manchester United are also interested and Italian side Napoli have already confirmed their interested with a £10 million bid.

Rafael Benitez can offer guaranteed first team football in Italy but Gonalons may have to settle for squad rotation at the Emirates Stadium.
