According to Metro, the Gunners have made an offer of £21.3 million to Sporting Lisbon for one of their crown jewels – Portuguese international midfielder William Carvalho.
The North London club have been following the midfielder on and off all summer and were believed to have made a £20 million bid – but it was rejected by the Primeira Liga giants.
However, it seems that they have now dropped their asking price for the midfielder, leaving Arsenal confident that their new bid will be enough to secure his signature.
The complex nature of the deal means that it is likely to go all the way to the latter stages on deadline day but it is believed that all parties are keen on the move going through.
It comes as a major boost to Arsene Wenger who has up until now seen his quest for a midfielder hit a brick wall with deals for Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira and Southampton’s Morgan Schneirderlin fall through.
