Metro have a rather fascinating claim for us here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they note that Luis Suarez could well become Arsenal’s highest ever paid player.
The Liverpool forward has been trying to push through a transfer to the Emirates Stadium all summer and now it seems that he will be rewarded for that – should he actually succeed of course.
As we all know, Arsenal have one of the most rigid wage structures in the top flight and that is currently capped at £100,000 per week –which the likes of Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott are currently earning.
Now it seems Wenger is willing to turn his back on that and make a special exception for the man he has risked it all on this summer.
Suarez will cost the Gunners in excess of £40 million should they land him and they are prepared to add to that by offering the forward £160,000 per week – an amount that would blow the £120,000 Liverpool pay him – out of the water.
Liverpool may still be standing firm on their reluctance to allow Suarez to leave, yet as one of our punters quips, the Uruguayan forward seems hell bent on getting out of Anfield and given Brendan Rodgers has told him to apologise to team-mates and to the club for his behaviour before returning to the first team, we think that could be a while off yet.
