The Football Transfer Tavern has been literally brought to a standstill tonight as Jamie Sanderson from Metro talks about a surprise transfer target for Arsenal.
Sanderson suggests that the Gunners are planning an offer for West Ham United centre back Winston Reid when the January transfer window opens.
Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is thought to be looking for a new centre back, given the uncertainty over the future of club captain Thomas Vermaelen.
And now it appears that having tracked his progress over the last year, Hammers star Reid has become one of Wenger’s prime January targets.
We must admit that Reid has put some impressive performances in for Sam Alladyce’s side over the last 12 month as the 25-year-old has established himself as one of the most consistent defenders in the Premier League.
This fine form could see a switch to the Emirates Stadium on the cards with Wenger understood to be plotting a £6 million offer for the New Zealand international.
Arsenal’s chief scout Steve Rowley is an advocate of the possible transfer after drawing up extensive reports on his displays with Rowley concluding that Reid would be the perfect fit for the Gunners.
However they could yet face competition for the 6 ft 3 in defender. who is contracted until 2015 at Upton Park, with Manchester United and Liverpool also thought to be keen on the defender.
As one punter quips, in a position where Wenger needs numbers and at a bargain £6 million, surely Reid would represent sensible transfer business from the Gunners?
