Earlier in the Football Transfer Tavern we were able to report news that Arsenal had lined up a surprise move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema but now Metro suggests that the Gunners have also targeted a swoop for winger Angel Di Maria.
The Argentine international could finally arrive at the Emirates Stadium as German forward Lukas Podolski edges closer to the exit door following a disappointing 12 months with the Gunners.
Di Maria, who Wenger tried to sign back in 2007 before his move to Benfica, is valued at around £18 million by the Bernabeu club but he has reportedly been made available for sale as they desperately try to raise funds to pay for the record breaking transfer for Gareth Bale.
Podolski only joined Wenger’s side in a £10 million deal from Cologne last summer but has proved something of a failure as the French boss struggled to find his best position and according to reports in Germany the Gunners are ready to sell the 28-year-old.
Arsenal have so far only recruited French youngster Yaya Sanogo but reports in the tavern suggest that Wenger is ready to spend close to £100 million by the end of the current transfer window as he slowly realises that his side needs some urgent strengthening.
The wake up call for the long serving boss came after the depressing 3-1 home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday although there was some signs of progress during their 3-0 away victory at Fenerbahce last night.
Would Di Maria mark an excellent acquisition by the Gunners? Should Podolski be given more time to improve? Let us know your thoughts below.
