Arsenal to solve defensive crisis with £10m Dutch solution?

Virgil van DijkArsenal fans are still celebrating last night’s Champions League qualifying win against Turkish outfit Besiktas.

But the Gunners were made to work hard for their victory and even Mathieu Debuchy to a red card in the process.

Now according to the Daily Star, the North London giants are set to bid £10 million for Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk.

The defender has impressed with Scottish giants Celtic following his £2.5 million from Groningen last summer.

Arsene Wenger is on the lookout for defensive reinforcements after selling Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona earlier this summer and Celtic’s lack of Champions League football could play into the Frenchman’s hands.

Various Premier League clubs including Sunderland and Tottenham are also interested and it now seems the player is certain to quit Parkhead after revealing he is considering his future in light of their Champions League exit to Maribor.

He said: “It is difficult to say if this defeat will have an influence on my future. I want to play at the highest level.

“We were playing for a place in the Champions’ League group stages, and sadly we haven’t gone through.

“I am a Celtic player for now, but we will have to see what happens. The Champions League is the highest level, and now we have gone into the Europa League. It is still European football, but on a somewhat lower level.

“Let’s see what happens. The transfer window will be open until Monday night.”
